The unit that lets a sealed house breathe
Today's homes are built airtight to be efficient - but an airtight house needs a unit to renew its air, otherwise humidity, odours and stale air stay trapped inside. That is the air exchanger's job: it expels stale air and brings in fresh air, recovering the heat along the way so your bill does not take the hit in winter.
In Quebec, this is not optional: the Construction Code requires mechanical ventilation in dwellings, and the air exchanger is the standard way to meet it. In new construction, in major renovations, or when an old unit gives out, installing or replacing a compliant air exchanger is what keeps your home healthy and in order.
The situations vary. In new construction, the exchanger is part of the ventilation system to be designed from the start. In a renovation, especially after work that makes the house tighter, adding or upgrading an exchanger often becomes necessary for the air to keep renewing itself. And on an aging unit that no longer ventilates enough, replacing it with an efficient model fixes the condensation, the heavy air and the poorly managed humidity all at once. We adapt the recommendation to your situation, not the other way around.
The choice between an HRV (heat recovery ventilator) and an ERV (energy recovery ventilator) depends on your type of home and your humidity issue. We assess your house to recommend the right unit and the right sizing - an undersized exchanger does not ventilate enough, an oversized one dries the air out too much.

Repair the old one or install a new one?
An air exchanger lasts a long time, but not forever. When the motor weakens, the core is done or parts can no longer be found, replacing it often costs less in the long run than fighting with a unit at the end of its rope. Conversely, an exchanger still in good shape that ventilates badly sometimes just needs a thorough cleaning - and we will tell you straight rather than selling you a new unit you do not need.
That is the whole advantage of a team that does both: we maintain air exchangers with our air exchanger cleaning, and we install them. So when we assess yours, we have no interest in leaning one way or the other - we tell you what is genuinely worth it for your situation.

Nous sommes en copropriété et nous nous doutions qu'une des copropriétaires avait un nid d'oiseau dans son conduit de sécheuse. Pierre-Alexandre est venu faire un bon nettoyage et a été assez respectueux de la nature pour poser sous nos cèdres les 3 oeufs trouvés avec une partie du nid enlevé au cas où la mère reviendrait pour ses petits.
