Your air exchanger, an HRV (heat recovery ventilator) or an ERV (energy recovery ventilator), does one simple but essential thing: it expels stale air from the house and brings in fresh air from outside, recovering the heat on the way through so your heating bill does not take the hit in winter. It is what keeps the air from turning heavy and what controls indoor humidity when the house is closed up six months a year.
The problem is that an air exchanger runs continuously and gets fouled continuously. The recovery core loads up with dust, the filters clog, the condensation pan and drain accumulate grime, and the intake ducts collect whatever passes through. After a while, the unit is pushing air through a blocked system - it runs, but it is not renewing much of anything.
That is often where winter condensation on the windows comes from: an air exchanger that is no longer doing its job lets humidity build up in the house, and it settles on the first cold surface it finds, the glass. Many people assume their unit is fine because it is running - but running and doing its job are not the same thing.

Nous sommes en copropriété et nous nous doutions qu'une des copropriétaires avait un nid d'oiseau dans son conduit de sécheuse. Pierre-Alexandre est venu faire un bon nettoyage et a été assez respectueux de la nature pour poser sous nos cèdres les 3 oeufs trouvés avec une partie du nid enlevé au cas où la mère reviendrait pour ses petits.
