What makes your air conditioner smell bad
Your air conditioner, wall-mounted or central, passes the air of the house over a cold coil to cool it down. That air carries dust, and the coil stays permanently damp while the unit runs. Dust plus moisture, on a dark enclosed surface: that is exactly what mould needs to take hold. That is where the stale smell comes from, the one that returns every time you turn the air conditioner on.
The coil (the evaporator) loads up with grime, the blower wheel (the fan pushing the air) gets fouled, and the condensation pan and drain accumulate standing water and deposits. The filter only catches the coarse dust at the surface - everything else passes through and lodges in the parts you cannot reach without taking the unit apart.
And it is not just a question of smell. A fouled air conditioner strains to do the same job: a dirty coil insulates poorly, the air circulates less, the compressor runs longer and harder. The result: a rising bill, a unit wearing out prematurely, and eventually a compressor that gives out.

Rinsing the filter is a good habit, but it only touches the first barrier. The dust that matters, the kind that has stuck to the damp coil and feeds the mould, is inside the unit. To reach it, you have to take the machine apart and clean under pressure - a surface vacuum does not even come close.
The other idea is "my air conditioner still cools, so it must be fine." The problem is that a fouled unit does still cool - but by straining. You do not notice the difference in comfort right away, you notice it on the bill and on the day the compressor gives out. An air conditioner that has never been cleaned means a compressor straining for years until it eventually blows.
And that is where the math gets serious: if parts for your model are no longer made, a dead compressor often means replacing the whole unit. Cleaning is what protects your investment. Nous sommes en copropriété et nous nous doutions qu'une des copropriétaires avait un nid d'oiseau dans son conduit de sécheuse. Pierre-Alexandre est venu faire un bon nettoyage et a été assez respectueux de la nature pour poser sous nos cèdres les 3 oeufs trouvés avec une partie du nid enlevé au cas où la mère reviendrait pour ses petits.
